170 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the number of prison places available in 1995 or the most recent year for which figures are available; and the number of prisoners that occupied these places in a full year. [14606/96]

Minister for Justice (Mrs. Owen)

The capacity of the prisons in 1995 varied between 2,184 and 2,239 places. The variation would arise from the non-availability of some cells due to refurbishment works or for operational reasons.

The throughput of prisoners in 1995 was approximately 9,920.
