Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

28 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Defence the total amount of money paid out to persons suffering from hearing damage with the armed forces; and the total number of outstanding claims to be processed by his Department. [12426/96]

The amount of compensation including legal costs paid by the Department in respect of loss of hearing claims in each of the past three years is as follows: 1995, £1,362,821; 1994, £666,012; 1993, £251,183.

The total number of outstanding civil legal claims in respect of alleged loss of hearing by serving and former members of the Defence Forces to be processed by my Department is about 3,000.
