Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Louth Dermatology Service.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

220 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Health the current position regarding a dermatology service for the Louth area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16539/96]

Limerick East): Dermatology is primarily an outpatient service. The service is currently provided for the Louth area on a four weekly basis both at Louth County Hospital and Our Lady of Lourdes, Drogheda by a consultant-led outreach service from Beaumont Hospital. This service provides treatment for approximately 600 patients each year. In addition, in 1995 and 1996, my Department made waiting list initiative funds available to allow the purchase of additional outpatient dermatology sessions in the North-Eastern Health Board area.

I am aware that the North-Eastern Health Board adopted a policy in 1995 for the development of a consultant-led dermatology service for the region. This proposal is being considered in my Department in the context of available resources and the priorities of the North-Eastern Health Board.
