Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Study of Children with Down's Syndrome.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

271 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Health his views on whether the proposal of Trinity College, Dublin and the Down's Syndrome Association for a study of children with Down's Syndrome could make a valuable contribution to planning services and ensuring that such children are properly screened for various medical conditions; if he will ensure that this study is funded as soon as possible; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16912/96]

I met the Down's Syndrome Association earlier this year to discuss its research proposal. The study would provide valuable information for the medical professionals involved in the care of these children. I informed the association that the most appropriate avenue through which to apply for assistance would be through the Health Research Board.

While the board's funding support for research project grants for 1996 has already been allocated, the association has applied to the board for funding in 1997.
