Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - New Science Syllabi.

Micheál Martin

Ceist:

383 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education when she proposes to introduce new syllabi in physics and chemistry; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16177/96]

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment has produced draft revised syllabi for physics and chemistry in the last few years. I have indicated that I will not approve the introduction of new syllabi until the proposed assessment arrangements have been costed and agreed and the necessary incareer development provided.

I understand that the NCCA now proposes a feasibility study on the assessment of practical work, a prerequisite of the new syllabi. When the results of that feasibility study are available and I have received recommendation from the NCCA I will then be in a position to decide when and in what manner the new syllabi in physics and chemistry can be introduced.
