Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Examination Appeals Procedure.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

386 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education if she will provide for a standardised examination appeals procedure for students attending all universities and third level colleges; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16257/96]

Issues relating to examination appeals procedures are a matter for the institutions themselves. A central feature is the clear acceptance that all students have the right of access to such procedures.

While there are some variations in the systems adopted by the various institutions, made necessary by the fact that certain institutions have different assessment procedures, there are a number of common features, viz; students are entitled to discuss their performance after examination results are published, they are entitled to seek a re-check of results, they are entitled to an appeal of results.

In the circumstances, I do not consider it appropriate that I should impose a standard procedure on all colleges.
