Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Committee on the Constitution.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

30 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Taoiseach the timetable for the all-party Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution. [16405/96]

The Government, on 3 July 1996, in announcing the publication of the report of the Constitution Review Group, also announced the establishment, following consultation with the leaders of the Opposition Parties, of an informal All-Party Committee to undertake a full review of the Constitution and to establish those areas where constitutional changes may be desirable or necessary. Copies of the relevant press release which also set out the membership and terms of reference of the committee, were placed in the Oireachtas Library. In relation to reports of the all-party committee it has been agreed that the committee may bring forward an interim report on specific sections of the Constitution by early 1997 and a final report as soon as possible thereafter. It is a matter for the committee to settle its own procedures, subject to the terms of reference already agreed. Pending a report from the all-party committee it is premature to discuss what changes, if any, might be recommended by Government to the people in a referendum.
