Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Primary Schools Staffing.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

411 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education if she will give the details of the schools involved in the primary sector which are adversely affected in spite of an agreement on concessions reached between the INTO and her Department; if she will outline in each case the deficit of pupils involved and what will happen in each case in 1997, based on September 1996 figures; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16410/96]

As the Deputy is aware, the staffing of a national school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school as at 30 September of the previous year. Details of schools in which posts were suppressed at the end of the 1995-96 school year will be forwarded separately to the Deputy.

At this stage, it is not possible to indicate the likely staffing at schools in the 1997-98 school year. The first stage in determining the 1997-98 staffing allocation will not commence until data relating to enrolments at 30 September, 1996, is submitted to my Department. Thereafter, checking and analysis of the data must be undertaken. In the circumstances, the Deputy will appreciate that it will be some time yet before any consideration can be given to the 1997-98 staffing allocations.
