Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Bus Service.

Joe Walsh

Ceist:

419 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made for an extension of a school bus service in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [16529/96]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that an extension of the service can be sanctioned from the area as requested. I understand that a total of eight pupils, including the child in question, will benefit from the extension.

Bus Éireann, which acts as agents for my Department in the day to day operation of the school transport scheme, has been asked to make the necessary arrangements.

Ceist:

420 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made for an extension of a school bus service in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [16530/96]

Bus Éireann, which operates the school transport scheme on behalf of my Department, has advised that the roads in question are of poor condition and are not suitable for a school transport vehicle.

In addition, the extra cost of providing an extension in this case would be prohibitive and would set an unsustainable precedent in the operation of the scheme.

Accordingly, it is not open to my Department to provide an extension to the existing service, as requested.
