650 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of outbreaks of BSE in cattle herds to date in 1996; the method of disposal of these herds; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17006/96]
Thirty-five cases of BSE have been confirmed, to date, in 1996. Current policy is to slaughter the entire herd in which the case has been confirmed and render the carcases into meat and bone meal. The meat and bone meal is excluded from both the animal feed and human food chains.
