653 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if his attention has been drawn to the request by BNFL for authorisation for the entire Sellafield site to increase radioactive emissions; and if he will make a statement on the matter regarding representations he has made in this regard. Following recent media reports that British Nuclear Fuels Plc, were applying for an increase in Sellafield's discharge authorisation limits, officials within my Department are pursuing the matter with the relevant UK Authorities. I understand, however, that the Environment Agency, the body responsible for considering applications for a revision in radioactive discharge authorisation limits in the United Kingdom, has not received any such application from British Nuclear Fuels in relation to Sellafield.
Nevertheless, continued vigilance will be maintained in relation to BNFL's activities in this regard.
