Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Corps Diplomatic Licence Plates.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

102 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the significance of diplomatic corps licence plates on motor vehicles; the status bestowed upon persons who drive such vehicles; the implications, if any, these licence plates have for parking and road accidents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16455/96]

Vehicles owned by diplomatic missions or persons enjoying diplomatic privileges and immunities are issued with vehicle registration plates in the same way as those issued to any other vehicle owner. To facilitate recognition of their privileges and immunities embassies and diplomats often incorporate the letters "CD" on their licence plates. However, such licence plates do not of themselves convey any special privileges or immunities.
