Vol. 469 No. 5

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

Michael Smith

Ceist:

152 Mr. M. Smith asked the Minister for Education if she will approve a grant in respect of a sports capital programme for the Presentation Convent, Ballingarry, Thurles, County Tipperary. [17717/96]

In general, school projects are not eligible for national lottery funding under either the recreational facilities scheme or the major facilities scheme. However, a limited number of school sports facilities have been assisted under the schemes where the project is being undertaken by a local community group in co-operation with a school. One of the conditions attaching to the scheme is that the completed facility must be available to all sections of the community.

An application from the organisation in question could be considered in the context of the limited funds available and the many hundreds of applications from sport and community groups already on hand in my Department.

My Department has received an application under the sports capital programme from the school in question.
