181 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases which are pending against the State claiming damages for personal injuries by persons who allege they were mistreated while in State care; the number of institutions, if any, involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17653/96]

The number of cases pending against the State in respect of persons claiming damages for personal injuries received following alleged mistreatment while in Garda custody is 66.

The number of cases pending against the State in respect of prisoners claiming damages for personal injuries received following alleged mistreatment while in prison custody is 26. The number of institutions involved is five.
