Vol. 469 No. 5

Written Answers. - Army Border Patrols.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

220 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Defence if he will clarify the new role proposed for the Army on the Border with regard to the BSE crisis; if additional allowances will be given to the Army in the implementation of this new role; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17904/96]

Following a review of the measures taken to prevent the illegal transfer of cattle across the Border, the Government has decided to make greater use of Garda mobile patrols and checkpoints backed up where appropriate by mobile Army patrols. These combined with intelligence reports will produce equally satisfactory security in respect of cattle movements.

Military personnel on the Border are already in receipt of additional pay in the form of Border duty allowance. There is no proposal to change this.
