Vol. 469 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taoiseach's Temporary Absence.

Bertie Ahern

Ceist:

1 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Taoiseach the arrangements, if any, that were made for any member of the Government to act as Taoiseach during his absence on holidays in view of reports in a newspaper (details supplied). [16339/96]

Article 28.6.3º of the Constitution, states that the Tánaiste shall act for and in the place of the Taoiseach during the temporary absence of the Taoiseach.

This provision is availed of, as and when necessary, during any absence of mine from the country, including my absence on holiday. Naturally, I am available, by means of modern communications, to deal with any matter requiring my personal attention at all times, whether at home or abroad.

Would that be by mobile telephone?

Usually by land line. There is also a mechanism known as the fax. I will give the Deputy an introduction to these sometime.
