Vol. 469 No. 5

Written Answers. - Nurses' Examination Report.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Ceist:

95 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Health when the report on the marking of nurses' examinations was completed; if it has been discussed by An Bord Altranais; if so, if a decision has been reached; and the action, if any, he proposes to take on foot of the report. [17651/96]

Limerick East): The report to which the Deputy refers is an internal Bord Altranais report which was commissioned by the board executive from the Educational Research Centre in St. Patrick's College of Education, Drumcondra in view of inconsistencies between examiners in relation to a single examination held in November, 1995. I am informed that the report was supplied to the board in March, 1996. While the running of examinations is an executive function, the board was immediately made aware of the issues raised in the report together with the recommendations made. The board authorised the executive to proceed with implementation of the recommendations and already additional training has been provided for examiners, enhanced monitoring of examiners has been introduced and additional examiners have been employed in the rechecking system.

I am satisfied that the board will continue to ensure, as the body with statutory responsibility for nurse examinations, that any inadequacies detected in its examining system are rectified without delay.
