Vol. 469 No. 5

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Scheme.

Noel Davern

Ceist:

115 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for the Environment if he will include Carrick-On-Suir, County Tipperary, in the 1997 budget for urban renewal to enable this town to become more attractive for investment and job creation in view of the very serious job losses sustained by this town in 1996. Mary O'Rourke

Ceist:

117 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for the Environment if he has considered urban renewal designation for smaller towns throughout the country; and if he will review the position of Moate, County Westmeath, in this regard. [18016/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 115 to 117, inclusive, together.

The present urban renewal scheme commenced in August 1994 and operates in 35 centres throughout the country. A comprehensive review of the impact, effectiveness and cost of the urban renewal schemes which have operated to date is currently under way to assist in the formulation of future policy in this area.

It is not intended that the current scheme will be extended to any additional towns or areas. It would be inappropriate to consider what new areas, if any, might be suitable for designation as part of any future scheme until general policy in relation to the next phase of urban renewal is determined in the light of the review.
