Ceist:

154 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of job losses, which have occurred during the past two years; the commercial and industrial areas in which these job losses have occurred; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18235/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 153 and 154 together. I am assuming the questions relate to job creation performance within the remit of my Department. The position is as follows:

Job gains in manufacturing and internationally traded and financial services in 1995 were at the highest level in the ten years 1986-95 at 24,186. This showed an 11.2 per cent increase on the 1994 figure.
Job losses over the same ten year period declined by 30.5 per cent from 20,444 in 1986 to 14,212 in 1995. The 1995 figure represents the lowest level of losses over that ten years.
Net change in overall employment developed from a loss of 3,616 jobs in 1986 to a gain of 6,336 in 1994. Further market improvement was recorded in 1995, when an additional 9,974 net jobs were created — 57.4 per cent above the 1994 level.

Further information on the sectoral breakdown of the above figures is contained in Forfás's 1995 Employment Survey, a copy of which I am sending separately to the Deputy.
