Vol. 469 No. 7

Written Answers. - Discussions re. 1996 Olympic Games.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

137 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education the outcome of the recent discussions between the Minister of State at her Department, the Olympic Council of Ireland and Bord Luthchleas na hÉireann, which resulted from problems that arose at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. [18217/96]

The Minister of State with responsibility for Sport in my Department met separately Bord Lúthchleas na hÉireann, BLE and the Olympic Council of Ireland, OCI. While the Minister indicated that he was not apportioning blame, he expressed his concern about certain incidents which occurred between the two organisations in Atlanta; incidents which received widespread media attention.

The Minister of State made it clear to the OCI and BLE that in future there must be no repetition of the regrettable incidents which occurred in Atlanta.
