Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Landfill Proposal.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

190 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment if he approved, supported or voted for the landfill proposal that excluded rural areas with a population density of less than 35 persons per square kilometre, in view of his reply to a parliamentary question on 2 October 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18322/96]

The proposal for a Council Directive on the landfill of waste included a provision whereby small landfills serving inaccessible mountainous settlements, small islands and rural areas with a population density of less than 35 inhabitants per square kilometre could, at the discretion of each member state, be exempted from certain requirements of the proposed Directive. Ireland supported the common position adopted by the Environment Council in favour of the proposed Directive which was subsequently rejected by the European Parliament.
