Ceist:

210 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Education the subjects which are on the approved second-level curriculum for students engaged in teaching practice for the Higher Diploma in Education; if computer studies is included; and, if not, if it is proposed to include computer studies and other subjects. [18347/96]

Students engaged in teaching practice for the Higher Diploma in Education may teach any subject included in the approved second-level curriculum. Computer studies, although not an examination subject, is included as an option and may, therefore, be taught by the students in question.

The subject on the approved second-level curriculum are shown on the following list:

List of Approved Second-Level Subjects

(a) Subjects approved for recognised junior pupils: (1) Irish; (2) English; (3) Mathematics; (4) History and Geography; (5) Latin; (6) Greek; (7) Classical Studies; (8) Hebrew Studies; (9) French; (10) German; (11) Spanish; (12) Italian; (13) Science; (14) Technology; (15) Home Economics; (16) Music; (17) Art, Craft, Design; (18) Materials Technology (Wood); (19) Metalwork; (20) Technical Graphics; (21) Business Studies; (22) Typewriting; (23) Environmental and Social Studies; (24) Civics or Civic Social and Political Education.

(b) Subjects approved for recognised senior pupils: (1) Irish; (2) English; (3) Latin; (4) Greek; (5) Classical Studies; (6) Hebrew Studies; (7) French; (8) German; (9) Italian; (10) Spanish; (11) History; (12) Geography; (13) Mathematics; (14) Applied Mathematics; (15) Physics; (16) Chemistry; (17) Physics and Chemistry; (18) Agricultural Science; (19) Biology; (20) Agricultural Economics; (21) Engineering; (22) Technical Drawing; (23) Construction Studies; (24) Home Economics (Scientific and Social); (25) Home Economics (General); (26) Accounting; (27) Business Organisation; (28) Economics; (29) Economic History; (30) Art (including Crafts); (31) Music.

(c) The second level programme also includes approved syllabuses for computer studies and physical education but these subjects do not form part of the certificate examinations.
