As the Deputy is aware, the staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year.
The enrolment of Aphort national school on 30 September 1995 was 20 pupils. This enrolment warrants staffing of a principal only for the 1996-97 school year. The school also has the services of a shared remedial teacher.
The post of principal teacher at Aphort national school was filled on a temporary basis from 1 September 1996 pending consideration of the possible amalgamation of Aphort national school and Arranmore national school. The filling of the post on a permanent basis will be reviewed when the position regarding amalgamation is finalised.
