Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Scottish Prisoner Immunity.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

251 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will have arrangements made to investigate the claims of a prisoner (details supplied) in Portlaoise Prison that a person was granted immunity in Scotland in order to testify against the prisoner in Ireland and has not been prosecuted here having admitted to conspiracy. [18515/96]

A decision on whether or not to institute criminal proceedings in this jurisdiction, is a matter for the Director of Public Prosecutions who is independent in the exercise of his functions. Accordingly, it would not be appropriate for me as Minister for Justice to intervene in any individual case. Decisions in regard to prosecution-related matters in Scotland are a matter for the Scottish authorities.
