Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

253 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice the arrangements, if any, currently in place to facilitate Australian citizens working in this State; the procedures involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18540/96]

Ministerial responsibility for work permits is a matter in the first instance, for my colleague, the Minister for Enterprise and Employment.

I understand that arrangements exist whereby Australian students may apply for a permit to engage in temporary or casual employment while on holiday in Ireland. Applications to participate in this scheme should be made to the Irish Embassy in Canberra. This scheme is administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the Department of Enterprise and Employment. Permits issued in such cases are valid for up to 6 months only but the holder may not engage in work with any one employer for a period in excess of three months. Applicants may be required to provide certain documentary evidence to establish their bona fides and must have sufficient funds to support themselves for at least the initial part of their holiday or in the event of their failing to secure employment.
A reciprocal scheme exists for Irish students travelling to Australia.
I understand that all other Australian citizens are subject to the normal criteria in place for the granting of work permits to non European Economic Area nationals. Details about work permits may be had from the Department of Enterprise and Employment.
