Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drug Statistics.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

255 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the number of Irish people who have been arrested or charged in other jurisdictions with importing drugs into this jurisdication; the information, if any, which has been supplied to the Irish authorities in relation to such charges; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18618/96]

It is not possible to supply the statistics sought by the Deputy.

There is ongoing contact, and communication of information, between the Garda Síochána and police forces in other jurisdictions about the movement and activities of criminals.

That information could include, among other things, information about arrests, but it would certainly not be in the interests of effective law enforcement, and would be contrary to long standing practice, to disclose details concerning any information supplied to the Garda in connection with such matters.
