Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - BSE Case.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Ceist:

293 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the reason a person(details supplied) in County Tipperary, one of whose animals died from BSE in July 1996, has not had his herd depopulated or compensation paid to him for the herd which is now restricted, particularly in view of the fact that a second animal has now died, apparently of BSE, in this herd and a third animal in the herd is believed to be suffering from the disease; and the reason for his Department's failure to deal with the matter over such a long period. [18602/96]

BSE was confirmed in an animal from the farm in question on 14 August. The herd has been restricted since 9 August and a valuation of the herd for depopulation purposes was given to the owner on 11 October. My Department is very concerned with certain aspects of the case and has referred the matter to the Garda Síochána for further investigation.
