Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Campaign Against Sellafield.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

299 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the current state of the Irish Government's campaign against Sellafield; and when he intends to commence international legal action on the Sellafield issue. [18263/96]

I refer to my replied to Questions Nos. 30, 402 and 403 of 2 July 1996 and the Minister for the Environment's response to Questions Nos. 333 and 372 on 25 September 1996. These have clearly set out the Government's position in relation to Sellafield, and indeed, the British nuclear industry generally. Recently, Ireland's concerns in relation to nuclear power and, in particular, the safety of the British nuclear industry and the reprocessing, transport and storage of nuclear materials were raised at the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, held in Vienna from 16 to 20 September 1996. These concerns will continue to be highlighted at every opportunity in all international fora.

The Committee of Ministers on Sellafield has asked the Attorney-General to reassess the Possibilities for legal action against Sellafield. Detailed consideration continues to be given to all options for legal redress but a firm legal case which relies on sound scientific evidence is, of course, a vital element in this matter.
