The numbers of prison officers, representing all grades up to and including the grade of Governor, are as follows: 1 January 1994 — 2,343; 1 January 1995 — 2,479 and 30 September 1996 — 2,475. As the Prison Service provides 24-hour service, 365 days per year, these figures are not indicative of the number of officers who may be on duty at any one time.
