Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork Prison Overcrowding.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

88 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to alleviate overcrowding in Cork Prison; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18401/96]

During the last six months or so there has been an increase in the number of committals to Cork prison resulting in some overcrowding from time to time. Measures implemented to alleviate this pressure on space include transfers to other institutions and, in suitable cases, temporary release. The prisons building programme which is under way at present will, when fully implemented, provide an extra 800 prison places and I am pleased to confirm that approximately 100 of these places will become available during the next two months.
