Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - State Penitentiary.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

101 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to allocate one prison as a penitentiary for serious or long-term offenders; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18414/96]

There are currently 12 prisons and places of detention under the jurisdiction of my Department. These facilities provide for the placement of each offender, including those convicted of serious offences or sentenced to long-term sentences, in the most appropriate institution within the system having regard to a number of considerations including security and rehabilitative services. The plans already announced for additional prison places will, when implemented, enhance the options available for the placement of offenders within the system as well as allowing for a review of the existing arrangements for the accommodation of the various classes and categories of prisoners within the institutions.
