Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mountjoy Prison Medical Services.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

116 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, which has been made in seeking to resolve the contractual difficulties relating to the provision of medical services to Mountjoy Prison; when this matter will be resolved in view of the urgency of providing adequate medical services to the prison; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18447/96]

As indicated in my response to Deputy O'Donnell on 25 July 1996 I have been pursuing with the law officers certain aspects of the proposed contract for prison medical doctors. The formal advice which I requested has only just been made available to me. It will need to be considered by my Department and the Department of Finance prior to a resumption of discussions with the Irish Medical Organisation. I am hopeful that these discussions may bring this issue to a conclusion.
