Ceist:

119 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Justice the number of prisoners currently on temporary release from Irish prisons; and the number of temporary releases in respect of each prison. [18403/96]

On Thursday, 10 October 1996, 462 persons were on varying periods of temporary release. A breakdown of this figure by institution is set out below:

The reasons for temporary release in these cases include a few hours to attend a funeral, doctor, etc., and day releases to attend educational facilities.

On 15 July 1996, the latest date for which accurate figures are available, the following was the breakdown of the age of offenders in custody:
