Vol. 470 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mallow (Cork) School.

Micheál Martin

Ceist:

160 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education if she will provide funds as a matter of urgency to ensure the acquisition of a site in Mallow, County Cork, for the purposes of constructing a new school for Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís, Mallow. [19729/96]

I am not in a position at this stage to indicate when a site will be purchased for Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís.

My Department is currently examining the overall accommodation situation in the Mallow centre. Where there is existing surplus primary school accommodation, as in the case of Mallow, options for housing a gaelscoil, other than the provision of a new school building, must be given serious consideration. The Deputy will appreciate that the most effective use of public monies must be made by my Department, particularly at a time when the demand for capital expenditure exceeds available resources.

As soon as this examination is completed, the question of making funds available for the acquisition of a site for Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís will be considered.
