Vol. 470 No. 7

Written Answers. - Drug Searches.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

201 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if two children and a baby (details supplied) were strip searched by gardaí; the reason for the search; if there was any evidence that this family was involved in drug dealing; if this family is prominent in community anti-drug activities; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19756/96]

It is not the practice of the Minister for Justice to comment in detail about individual Garda investigations. The Garda authorities have confirmed that a search involving this family was carried out recently in accordance with the provisions of section 26 of the Misuse of Drugs Acts, 1977/84 but that no children were strip-searched during the course of it.

Ceist:

202 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will have arrangements made to enable the Garda to ensure that the area around a premises (details supplied) at O'Connell Bridge, Dublin 1, is not used for drug dealing. [19758/96]

I am informed by the Garda Síochána that this area is patrolled by both uniformed and plainclothes gardaí on a 24 hour basis and by the Pearse Street drug unit.

Since the commencement of Operation Dóchas on 7 October 28 arrests have been made in the vicinity of this premises for the purposes of drug searches in accordance with the provisions of section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977. The Garda will continue to give appropriate attention to this area.
