Vol. 470 No. 7

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Micheál Martin

Ceist:

214 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will pay old age pension arrears to a person (details supplied) in County Monaghan back to the date of his entitlement. [19693/96]

The person concerned applied for an old age contributory pension on 14 April 1994, although he was 66 years of age in September 1989. This pension was awarded with effect from 14 January 1994, three months prior to the date of claim receipt.

Information recently to hand indicates that the person concerned had contacted the Department in January 1994 in relation to another benefit claim, On this basis, it has been decided to backdate pension entitlement to him for a further six months period from that date — that is, nine months in total — to the end of July 1993. Arrangements have been made to issue a cheque to him, covering the additional pension arrears due from 30 July 1993 to 13 January 1994 inclusively. There is no basis in legislation for any further backdating of pension entitlement in this case.
