Written Answers. - Television Reception.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

120 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht whether Moville, County Donegal, will be able to tune into Teilifís na Gaeilge when it comes into effect; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20036/96]

I understand from RTE that viewers in Moville, County Donegal will not be able to receive Teilifís na Gaeilge on the opening night. It is intended to install a transposer as soon as possible which will serve Moville.

RTE operates broadcasting transmitters and transposers under a licence issued by the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications on frequencies assigned by that Department. The assignment of radio frequencies is the subject of international agreements.

I understand that the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications has not yet been able to assign a frequency to the proposed transposer at Moville because that Department has, as yet, been unable to co-ordinate a frequency with the relevant UK authorities. Efforts to co-ordinate a frequency for the Moville transposer are ongoing by that Department but I understand they are not in a position to say how long it will take to secure agreement.
