Vol. 470 No. 7

Written Answers. - Burren (Clare) National Parks.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

121 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht his intentions regarding visitor facilities at the Burren National Park, County Clare. [20076/96]

The Burren National Park study, which was commissioned by me, was set in the context of a strategy for the wider north Clare area and published in February last as a discussion document for public consultation over a 12 week period in which a wide range of views were welcomed and received. It recommended, inter alia, a limited level of visitor facilities within the national park.

To that end, a planning application was lodged with Clare County Council on 24 October 1996.

This application, made by the Commissioners for Public Works in Ireland on my behalf, is for permission for an entry point at Crag Road (CR 103), Gortlecka and Knockaunroe, to the Burren National Park, comprising covered waiting area, toilets, ranger accommodation, ancillary parking, storage and signage. The application proposes the removal of elements, including the equipment building, treatment plant (part), landscaping (part) and the retention and completion of elements, including landscaping (part), reservoir and treatment plant (part), of a previously proposed visitor centre which will otherwise be backfilled and the land reinstated to its previous condition.
