Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Legal Aid Centre.

Denis Foley

Ceist:

184 Mr. Foley asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if he will provide additional staff for the Tralee free legal aid office in view of the fact that the office had a nine-month waiting list as of 30 September 1996. [22083/96]

I am continually monitoring the position with regard to waiting times at law centres, in consultation with the Legal Aid Board. Where, for whatever reason, waiting times at any of the law centres become excessive the cause of the problem is determined by the board following careful examination of the situation at the centre and appropriate remedial action is taken. The length of the waiting time in the law centre in Tralee is a cause of particular concern to me and officials of my Department have been in consultation with the Legal Aid Board in the matter. I can assure the Deputy that appropriate remedies will be applied in order to achieve more acceptable waiting times for legal aid applicants at the Tralee Law Centre.
