Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sale of Heritage Items.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

190 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he intends to directly intervene in the matter of the sale of heritage items from Headfort House in view of parliamentary questions raised by Deputy Lawlor regarding the loss through sale or theft of our collective legacy of art objects of significant heritage value. [21632/96]

The Deputy will, no doubt, have seen the report in the newspapers that the Heritage Council, which is an independent statutory body, has successfully intervened to purchase important items of furniture from Headfort House which had been put up for auction. I am pleased to advise the Deputy that the National Museum of Ireland and the heritage service of my Department were able to assist the Heritage Council in this successful acquisition.
