Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

258 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the provision of a capital allocation for the development of new classrooms at a school (details supplied) in County Cork. [22245/96]

A building project for the school to which the Deputy refers was included in my Department's capital programme. The inclusion of the project in the programme enables the project to progress through the planning process to contract stage. This project is now being brought to sketch scheme stage. The question of capital allocation arises only when the project reaches contract stage.

Ceist:

259 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in having a national school (details supplied) in County Cork refurbished and works carried out to the sanitary facilities and playground; if her attention has been drawn to the dreadful conditions of the school; and when a gaelscoil in the area will be transferred to this national school. [22246/96]

The delay in having refurbishments carried out at the school referred to by the Deputy was due to technical aspects of the project. These have now been finalised. Tenders are currently being examined within my Department and this process is expected to be completed very soon. My Department will then be in a position to award a contract. I am aware of the urgency of the project and am anxious that the works proceed at the earliest opportunity.

The contract for the transfer of the national school has been executed by my Department. I expect that this building will be available to the gaelscoil shortly.
