Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

John Ellis

Ceist:

264 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made as a matter of urgency for school transport facilities for a person (details supplied) in County Leitrim. [21667/96]

My Department makes every effort to provide school transport for children attending special schools and classes on either scheduled or special services. However, in some instances this is simply not feasible due to the particular circumstances of the case. Where a transport service cannot be provided, my Department offers a grant to the parents to help defray the cost of private transport arrangements. The amount payable depends on the distance involved and the level of attendance of the pupil.

The pupil in question had been facilitated with school transport until recently. However, following a number of incidents on the bus, in which this pupil was involved, it was decided for safety reasons to suspend transport facilities for this pupil. As an alternative arrangement, an annual transport grant up to a maximum of £1,500 has been sanctioned towards the cost of private transport arrangements for the pupil.
