Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Naas (Kildare) School Overcrowding.

Seán Power

Ceist:

273 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the current overcrowding problem at the Convent of Mercy secondary school, Naas, County Kildare; when works will commence on the roof repairs and extension to the school; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21894/96]

An extension of 1,350 square metres, to cater for 800 pupils has been approved for St. Mary's Convent of Mercy, Naas, County Kildare. Architectural planning is currently proceeding and revised stage two — outline sketch scheme — documentation is being examined by my Department's technical staff. When the outline sketch scheme has been approved the school authorities will be advised to proceed to the developed sketch scheme — stage three.

At this early stage of the planning process it is not possible to determine when construction of the proposed extension will commence. However, every effort is being made to have the planning of this extension completed as quickly as possible.

With regard to the roofworks project, the position is that the tender details have been examined by my Department's building unit and a letter has recently issued to the school authorities requesting clarification of certain items in this submission.

When the additional details have been submitted the matter will be progressed further.
