Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Employment of Civilians.

Denis Foley

Ceist:

322 Mr. Foley asked the Minister for Justice if she will have arrangements made to employ additional civilians by her Department to allow gardaí more time to deal with crime and to relieve them from administrative work and traffic duties, such as checking car tax and insurance, and to free them from attending court for minor prosecutions. [22075/96]

Arrangements are already in place to recruit the additional 200 civilians, as announced in the anti-crime package last July, which will release an equivalent number of gardaí for operational duties.

The present position is that 26 of these positions have already been filled, a further 24 posts will be filled this year and the remaining 150 positions will be filled in the early part of next year.
