Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Commission on Newspapers.

Liam Fitzgerald

Ceist:

370 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the conditions of appointment of ex-Chief Justice, Mr. Finlay, specifically in terms of his remuneration in relation to his work on the Commission on Newspapers in 1995, which reported in July 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21859/96]

The Commission on the Newspaper Industry was established on foot of a Government decision with specific terms of reference which were publicly announced. Mr. Thomas Finlay accepted the position of chairman of the commission on an honorary, i.e. non-remunerative basis with a view to ensuring that the commission reported on its terms of reference. Mr. Thomas Finlay brought considerable experience and ability to the position of chairman and I would like to take the opportunity to thank him and the other members of the commission for their excellent work.
