Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Alcoholic Fruit Drinks.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

373 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he has discussed with the drinks industry the promotion, packaging and sale of alcoholic fruit drinks in order to ensure that such drinks are not attracting under-age drinkers; if so, the results, if any, of these talks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21888/96]

My responsibility in this matter concerns the labelling of alcoholic fruit drinks. I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a related question on 22 October 1996, Question No. 265, volume 470, No. 4, col. 922-923, in which I indicated that I intended seeking the agreement of the European Commission, and of the member states, to introduce stringent requirements for the labelling of alcoholic fruit juices. Contact with the Commission has now been initiated.

Finally, I should add that I have been informed that my colleague, the Minister for Health, has been in contact with the drinks industry in this matter.
