As the Deputy will be aware the Taoiseach has indicated that Ireland is prepared to participate in a proposed international humanitarian protection force in Eastern Zaire to the extent that we can.
On Friday last, 15 November 1996, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution authorising the establishment of a multinational humanitarian intervention force in Eastern Zaire until 31 March 1997. Further discussions among possible troop contributors (including Ireland) are due to take place this week, after which the precise nature of what contribution Ireland can make will become known.
