Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Alcoholic Fruit Drinks.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

167 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health if he has discussed with the drinks industry the promotion, packaging and sale of alcoholic fruit drinks in order to ensure that such drinks are not attracting under-age drinkers; if so, the results, if any, of these talks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21889/96]

Limerick East): I informed the House on 6 November 1996 that the Director of Consumer Affairs has responsibility for the enforcement of regulations with regard to the labelling of food and drink products. I understand from my colleague, the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, that the Director has recently examined the labelling of alcoholic lemonades on sale here and found them to be in compliance with the food labelling provisions. The Minister for Enterprise and Employment is seeking the agreement of the European Commission, and of member states, to introduce stringent requirements for the labelling of alcoholic fruit juices with the aim of protecting consumers health.

In so far as my Department is concerned, my officials met with representatives of the drinks industry group on 4 November 1996. The discussion covered the concerns expressed to me with regard to the promotion of alcoholic fruit drinks and the possible initiatives which might be taken by industry. The group is aware of the concerns expressed about the marketing of certain alcoholic fruit drinks and is anxious to play its part in allaying public concern.
Further discussions will take place which will include the range of initiatives proposed in the national alcohol policy which aims to promote moderation in alcohol consumption and reduce the prevalence of alcohol-related problems in our community.
