Vol. 472 No. 2

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

27 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total cost of non-civil or public service staff attached to his office in 1995; the anticipated costs in 1996; and if he will give the comparative figures for each of the years 1987 and 1988. [20008/96]

For the purposes of this reply, non-civil or public service staff is taken to refer to advisers, personal assistants and personal secretaries attached to my ministerial office.

The 1995 cost of my special adviser, personal assistant and personal secretary was £64,264. The estimated cost of these staff in 1996 is £74,907.

The cost of the staff of the research unit attached to my office in 1995 was £6,984.43. The estimated cost of these staff in 1996 is £83,678.

The cost of personal ministerial staff in 1987 was £43,317 and the 1988 cost was £58,097. In today's terms, these equate to £65,920 and £79,119 respectively.

The costs furnished refer to salaries and allowances. Employers' PRSI costs and overtime costs are not included as corresponding figures are not available for 1987 and 1988. The support services, such as finance and personnel functions, for the ministerial office have always been provided from within the existing resources of the central support units of the Department.
