90 Mr. McGinley asked the Taoiseach if repairs to Rannagh Pier, Aphort, Arranmore Island, County Donegal, have been prioritised by Donegal County Council's Islands Committee; and if a grant will be made available to carry out the necessary repairs. [22856/96]
As you will be aware, on foot of the report of the interdepartmental co-ordinating committee on island development, new mechanisms have been established in order to deal with the development of access and related infrastructural work on the offshore islands, which was identified as a priority issue and towards which the Government made available an additional £1 million this year. Island access projects are selected and prioritised by the islands committees of the relevant local authorities. These projects are than assessed by the Interdepartmental Co-ordinating Committee and recommendations regarding funding subsequently made. Funding in respect of each priority access project is allocated to the relevant local authorities in accordance with normal Government accounting requirements.
To date in 1996, £157,250 has been made available to Donegal County Council for the development of access services. Details of projects which have received funding to date are listed in the following schedule. As Deputies will see from the schedule, works to be undertaken by Donegal County Council include pier works at Inisbofin and Inisfree, minor works at Leabgarrow, Arranmore, repairs to the quay wall at Burtonport and a feasibility study on pier works at Magheraroarty.
I understand that while the development of Aphort Pier has been included in the long-term programme of works received from Donegal County Council, it is not a priority for 1996.
